What Smart Dog Owners Do To Stop Aggressive Dog Behavior

by Aleesha London

There is a need for you to go through great lengths to stop aggressive dog behavior. You could be putting both your dog and other people in danger by leaving aggressive dog behavior unchecked. Like any other problem though, this one requires a step by step procedure.

Step 1: Discover the reason for aggression.

Dog training and learning to stop negative behavior in dogs should start with the owner’s awareness. Your dogs are not dumb animals and usually, aggressive behaviors are brought on by certain factors. For example, your dog may be exhibiting his instinct to dominate. If you only have one dog in the house and you bring in a new one, it will naturally exhibit its natural aggressiveness since it feels its superiority is being threatened by another dog.

There are other reasons for dog aggression. Whatever the reason for your dog’s aggressive behavior, it is up to you, as the owner, to identify what they are. Some information on dog psychology will definitely keep you on the right track on how to curb your dog’s aggressive behavior.

Step 2: Find the most ideal training program for your dog.

Training is the best way to stop aggressive dog behavior. There are many approaches to training though. You want only the best and most suitable for your best friend. One option is to simply enroll your dog in professional obedience classes. This will ensure that your dog is being handled by an experienced trainer. Should you choose this option though, you should remember that trainers use different techniques and also have different levels of expertise. To be sure that your dog is in good hands, you have to conduct your own basic research to find a good trainer.

You also have the option of training your dog yourself. If you naturally love animals and you feel that you have a natural instinct at handling your dog, obedience training should not be a problem for you. Since you are not a professional trainer, though, you will need the advice from real experts. The best way is to learn as much as possible on the different techniques of managing aggressive dog behaviors. Know the basic verbal commands that dogs usually interpret and react well to.

Step 3: Show affection and understanding for your dog.

Don’t be frustrated if your dog continues to manifest aggressive behavior. It’s quite possible that you’ve already enrolled him in obedience training or you may have even trained them yourself but this does not guarantee that your dog will change overnight or over one week. Training a dog and correcting a behavior takes time and patient.

Dogs have different personalities. Keep in mind that different approaches may work differently with different dogs. Be observant of your dog’s behavior while training and identify the strategies that work from those that don’t.

Training a dog to stop aggressive dog behavior cannot be stressed too highly enough. All you need is to find the right technique and to have the right amount of patience and perseverance to go through it.

Training Aggressive Dog - Serious issue with Pit Bulls and other

by Trevor

A joyful pup and its mistress once passed me on their walk in the park. The joy in the puppy’s half step half hop was quite evident. To it, every moving blade of grass was an investigative sherlock holmes mystery to be unraveled.

Seconds later, however as you are twenty or thirty meters away you and every one else hears a high pitch yapping and you turn already knowing with horror as you hear the deep throated roar that that little puppy that you just passed is in some serious trouble. Perhaps even its owner is not able to extricate it from the problem.

In many parts of North America that problem dog is actually a dog that has inherent anger problems perhaps due to an owner who wasn’t loving and caring or problems due to inbreeding and or its part of its gene makeup.

My neighbor tells the story of his dog which is actually half dog and half Northern wolf.

A little less than a year prior, he had chained his big wolf puppy to the tail gate of his chevy pickup. He had then gone inside for lunch while the puppy played outside. He says he wasn’t inside more than about 15 minutes before a deep snarl and a shout caused him to run to the front door.

A pitbull was running full out at highspeed with its owner running behind holding an empty leash. The pitbull crossed his front lawn in the blink of an eye and was airborne before anyone could as much as move a few feet. His own puppy backed up against the vehicle and waited silent and expectently for the rushing pitBull.

What happened next was more of a blur, but as he describes it the pitBull jumped and was airborne and in attack mode in no time at all. The waiting half wolf had expected this and when the pitbull grabbed for where the puppy’s throat was, it got nothing but air. On landing, the pitbull tried to launched itself yet again but the puppy was already above it in the air and promptly seized the pitbull’s throat as it attempted to shake it into submission.

The half puppy did a very adult thing. With astonishing strength it growled and thew the pitbull about 6 feet away.

What happened next is the stuff of legends. The furious pitbull twisted before it hit the ground. Some say that it never touched the ground before it was instantly airborne again. But the story was different this time. The wolf puppy didn’t wait this time. It timed the rush perfectly and met the pitBull almost at the end of its own leash. In a moment it was over. The big puppy snapped the neck of the pitBull and it was over.

The whole thing couldn’t have taken more than 5 seconds, both owners were shocked and stupified. The half wolf puppy backed away from the still body of the pitBull and sank down as its eyes looked around at the by then growing audience.

Its truly sad when something like this happens. The savagery of the episode is lost in the speed and suddeness of an attack like this. We heard that an older child had been threatened by the same dog a year earlier and that there was pending investigations about that due to those on the scene telling different versions of what they thought they saw.

I guess, the wheels of justice move slowly and that sometimes the animal kingdom simply takes things into its own. Afterwards, everyone was very certain that the puppy would have stood no chance under the fierce onslaught of the pitBull, but nature thought differently.

Dog Aggression Training Tips

by Andy Austim

If your dog is acting aggressively towards anyone then this is something that you should not tolerate and be dealt with as soon as the problem becomes apparent. But in order for you to be able to find the right type of dog aggression training for your pet in order to bring the problem under control, one first needs to know what kinds of aggression your dog has.

Below we look at what kinds of aggression a dog may suffer from either as a puppy or as a mature dog. But what is important to remember is that some dogs may only show one kind of aggression whilst others may show several.

1. Dominance - This kind of aggression will occur in a dog who thinks that they are in fact the alpha member (leader of the pack) and will use this as a way of asserting their dominance over the others in the pack (you and your family). Most commonly, you will find that male dogs and certain dog breeds are likely to suffer from this kind of aggressive behavior more. But in order for you to control the situation, you need to quickly and fairly establish that you and your family are the leaders in the group and they are at the bottom of the pack hierarchy.

2. Fear - A dog who suffers from this kind of aggression will generally find even the slightest noise can trigger an episode. In most cases such dogs will generally only growl, bark, bare their teeth or snap at the thing, which they are afraid or unsure of. However, should a owner choose to ignore the warning signs that their dog is suffering from this form of aggression it could lead to much more serious problems in the future. If left uncontrolled such dogs could end up causing injury to others as they may retaliate to the situation by biting what they feel is a threat to them.

3. Over Protective/Territorial - A dog who suffers from this form of aggressive behavior is actually a danger to anyone who they come into contact with. Along with feeling territorial about the place in which they leave, this if left to continue will also become an issue for dog and owner when they are away from the home as well.

4. Possessive - This type of behavior can turn a loving pet into a real monster and will occur without any prior warning. Normally this kind of behavior occurs in a dog whose owner has allowed them to have their own way and is over something that they consider to be theirs. Such things that may trigger this kind of aggression in a dog is if when playing with them you choose to take away what they have or if you approach them as they eat their food. The only way to prevent this behavior becoming any worse is to immediately react to the situation as soon as you notice it happening.

5. Punishment - This kind of aggressive behavior occurs more often in those animals where punishment has been used excessively by their owners. Although initially when being punished the dog may not respond aggressively towards their owner, if over time the punishments become more severe then the chances of the dog responding in such a way is greatly increased.

Above we looked at some of the kinds of aggressive behavior that a dog, no matter what age, breed or sex they are can have. However, in order for an owner to know what the right kind of dog aggression training they should be using to control the problem they first need to identify what type of aggressive behavior it is. The internet is a good place to find advice and information on all types of aggressive dog behavior.

What You Need To Know To Start A Dog Walking Business

by Pamella Neely

Before starting a dog walking business, you need to familiarize yourself with the different dog breeds, and their care and maintenance needs. All of this requires meticulous planning and attention to detail, or your business may do poorly and fail. Formulate a solid plan and be methodical as you construct your business.

One of the first steps you will need to take is to identify your target market. This means that you will need to conduct some research in order to pinpoint the geographic area of your potential customers. The best customers for any dog walking business are the handicapped, the elderly, people who work extended hours, and those who go out of town on frequent vacations. In addition to determining who your potential customers are, you also need to check out your competition. You can easily do this by searching online.

One of your next steps should be to make an estimate of your start-up costs. The bulk of your overhead will be in the form of basic dog supplies, business cards, pamphlets, and similar items. While planning your budget, allow some breathing room for unforeseen expenses. Get yourself licensed and insured before commencing your operations.

Advertising is one of the most important components to launching a successful dog walking business. Make sure you give out your business cards to your local veterinarians, pet supply stores, and all of your friends and acquaintances. You might find that word of mouth is one of the best ways to build up your customer base. Offer promotional discounts for your elderly customers, or for the handicapped, to try to increase your business. After your business becomes established, you may choose to offer additional services to your clients.

Another great way to gain exposure is by getting listed with one of the pet publications, or perhaps an online directory. Whenever people are looking for dog walkers or pet sitters, they refer to these. There are also various pet care organizations that you can contact about advertising. Becoming a member of one of these is a great idea so that you can get acquainted with the most recent developments in pet care, and to circulate with other pet sitters.

For each client that you acquire, you should create a contract that spells out the specifics of your job. This information should include the name of the dog you will be walking, how much money you are charging the client, the dates and time periods that you are scheduling for the dog, and the other services that you may be providing. It is important that you remember to have leashes, a first aid kit, and poop bags on hand.

As you develop your business, make sure you pay attention to any new opportunities that might come your way. Try to find new ways to develop or enhance your business so that you can continue to create a thriving client base. If you follow these guidelines, your dog walking business should become a great success.

Tips For German Shepherd Breeders And Buyers

by Jan Ryan

The first German Shepherd was named Hektor. Hektor was thought to be an excellent example of a sheep herding dog and in 1899 a German named Rittmeister Max von Stephanitz renamed Hektor, Horand von Grafath, and registered him as the first German Shepherd in the German Shepherd Dog Club of Germany. Von Stephanitz brought the breed back into popularity so much that approximately 48,000 German Shepherds were “enlisted” in World War I.

A German Shepherd breeder, unlike any other dog breeder, may specialize in German Shepherds trained in a certain line of work. For example, Shepherds are often trained to be guides for the visually impaired. They are also trained to become members of the police force and must know detailed scent, track and protection techniques.

When purchasing a German Shepherd it is important to know what to look for. Adult male German Shepherds weigh 85-100 lbs. and stand over two feet tall at the shoulder. Adult females are 55-75 lbs. and almost as tall as a male. Shepherds are prone to certain physical ailments such as hip and elbow dysplasia, other skeletal disorders that can cause lameness, and a blood disorder specific to the breed called von Willebrand’s Disease.

It is also important to know how to care for your German Shepherd. These dogs are happiest when working so it is essential that they be given tasks to do. Shepherds also require daily grooming and exercise. Hopefully, you have a purpose for buying this breed since German Shepherds need to work to be happy and they are intelligent enough to be trained in many areas, even only for home protection.

A reputable German Shepherd breeder will provide not only registration papers and certification of ancestry (preferably AKC certified) but also medical records showing evidence of health and immunization. These documents are necessary to determine whether you are getting a purebred, healthy German Shepherd.

Now that you know what to look for in a German Shepherd and a German Shepherd breeder, you are ready to find the perfect German Shepherd. There is an alternative to buying a purebred puppy from a breeder. Reputable breeders are usually affiliated with or run rescue centers. A German Shepherd rescue center houses Shepherds that have been abused, abandoned or neglected.

Unfortunately, many German Shepherds, among other dog breeds, are raised in what are termed puppy mills, where breeders continuously make the dogs produce litters with no regard for the adult’s health and happiness. Breeders who run illegal puppy mills are even worse than those trying to sell fake purebred dogs.

Rescue centers re-socialize the dogs and foster or adopt them out to loving homes. Consider a rescued German Shepherd as an alternative when buying your dog.

Ferret Care-Frequently Asked Questions

by G D Williams

Ferrets are available to purchase at your local pet store or stock breeder, also you might be able to acquire one at a animal shelter. Because they live such a long life just like a cat or dog, it is important that you know how to care for them and keep them healthy, happy pets.

First, ferrets are nocturnal creatures that rest during the day. When they wake up, you should not just tap the cage or look at them but rather let them come out so they can run round and play. When this happens, make sure that all cords are secure, small items are hidden and there are no small spaces that they can squeeze into. This will prevent them from getting lost or getting a injury.

These mammals live on strict diet and you should be well aware that they are carnivores. This means they can only be fed meat or poultry products as they require a lot of protein. There are ferret food products in the market so you best stock up to avoid the mistake of settling with cat food instead.

Besides from food, your ferret will obviously need water. It is better to put this in a water bottle, this will stop them spilling the contents.

Your ferret can never be left in the house by themselves specially if you have to go out for awhile. This is what the cage is for and you can get one that measures 18″ x 18″ x 30″ or a little larger. The key here is that it is spacious enough for them to move round particularly when as they grow.

Ferrets are curious animals and love toys, buying some is helpful if you have to come home late from work so they will have something to do until you return. The toys you buy will have to be robust, as they will need to be able to withstand their sharp teeth. Again these are readily available to you on the internet.

You want to house train your pet, this way you will keep your home clean. A great way to do this is with a litter box, start by putting some of there waste within the box and carrying them when you see that they are about to do it.

If this is done correctly, they should be rewarded with a light snack. This trick can as well be done to teach them how to do some neat tricks to amuse friends that drop by and pay a visit.

Your pet ferret should also be brought to the veterinary surgeon. States that allow you to have one expect owners to give them a vaccination once a year and keep the receipts for correct documentation.

Some would say that the best time to purchase a ferret is when it is very young because they are easier to train compared to those that are much older. But regardless of age, how things will go will be wholly up to you.

Ferret care is not hard, all it needs is a spot of common sense and you will be able to handle it ok. You are sure to enjoy the company of your furry friend for many a year to come and might even decide to purchase another one so your pet has company.

Eliminate Puppy Digging

by Mason Harding

There are 2 extreme schools of thought when it comes to a dog digging holes in your garden: one, that a dog is a dog and he’s going to dig, and he should be allowed to express his true doggy nature whenever and wherever he wants; and two, that a flowerbed is reserved for flowers, and if that dog even sets foot in it he’s in big trouble.

My feeling is really both. While it is a dog’s nature to dig and you want to let them be a dog as much as possible, I think you can have both a beautiful yard and a happy dog. This involves you being ready to train him so that this can happen.

If you are reading this piece, you more than likely are having an issue with a digging dog. Telling you that there are breeds, like Malamutes, Terriers, and Huskies, that are just plain diggers isn’t going to be real helpful. If you are only in the looking stage, this is the kind of information you will want to take into consideration when finding a breed that fits your temperament and lifestyle.

Let’s start with why dogs dig.

1. Not enough exercise. Digging gives them a way to burn off all their energy.

2. Bored. Dogs like to have a job to do and if they don’t, digging is one job they will find to do.

3. I gotta get outta here! Some dogs just want to see the world, and the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. These guys are nearly impossible to confine, no matter how much exercise and attention they get.

So how do you stop this dog digging behavior?

For sure, you can get them more exercise by walking them or letting them out more often. And if they are bored, buying them their own toys. And then best of all play tug of war with them

Use a natural deterrent. Dogs hate to dig where there is their own poop - even if they occasionally eat it! (For more information on dog poop-eating, visit the website below) If it can be arranged for there to be dog poop where he likes to dig, that might help.

You’ve tried everything and he just won’t stop digging - now what? It probably makes sense that he needs to dig. Your job is to find a spot that you can live with and start training him to use that place only. The size of your place doesn’t limit this from working.

Discover Which Dog Foods Might Just Be Poisoning Your Dog

by Linda McNaughton

With the commercial pet food industry being under the gun in recent times, it can be hard for any of us to believe that we will not be seeing more pet food recalls in the near future. The sad truth is that the dog food we buy in the stores has the potential to cause extreme illness to our dogs.

These recalls weren’t just small isolated cases - some of them were widespread and affected thousands of households.

Many pet owners lost their dogs - someone they considered members of their families - over tainted dog food incidents. Many dog lovers will never trust the commercialized dog food industry ever again.

Unfortunately, even if the dog food isn’t “tainted”, it is still not a healthy choice for your dog. There are so many horrible ingredients in commercial dog food that can have long term affects on your dog’s health.

It’s no mystery that there has been a huge trend in healthy eating. As humans we are becoming more aware of the benefits of eating a healthy diet and eating nutritious food to keep our bodies well fueled.

It’s easy not to think the same way when we are choosing out food for our dog. Many people are so used to just grabbing a bag of food whenever they run out. However, food plays just as important of a role in a dog’s life.

Some of the ingredients in commercial dog food have no place in a dog’s system. They are unreliable and extremely unhealthy.

As an example, corn gluten is a by-product that is found in dog foods. This is used because it is an incredibly cheap filler. However, not only is it an extremely poor source of protein, but it is one of the most common causes of allergies in dogs.

One of the worst ingredients found in commercial dog food is something called ‘chicken by-product meal’. This is a combination I hate describing - it’s nothing but ground up chickens feets, necks, bones, intestines etc. The companies use it because it’s cheap but it has the potential of being toxic or tainted. It sure doesn’t do your dog any good!

Soybean meal is an ingredient that is used in order to provide a source of protein. It’s cheap and is found in many dog foods. The problem is that soybean is the number one cause of allergies in dogs. It annoys me that they would include an ingredient that they know so many dogs will have a reaction to.

We could list several more ingredients, but I’m sure you get the point. The dog food you find in the stores is made up of such low quality ingredients that can put your dog’s health at risk. The companies aren’t looking to include the best ingredients for your pup - they just want to make as much money as they can.

Once you understand how to find the right food for your dog, it’s incredible to see the difference it makes in your dog’s life. You will see a happier, healthier and more obedient dog simply by making a couple simple changes to their diet.

Now, this article isn’t meant to make you think that there is no commercial dog food that is ok for your dog. You just need to know exactly what to look for to make sure your pup is getting the nutrition it needs. There’s a link at the bottom of this article where you can get more information.

It’s easy to find a diet for your dog that doesn’t include any of the nasty ingredients that you find in most of the commercial dog foods in the stores. The benefits to your dog are simple - a healthier, happier, and longer life!

Care Of African Parrots.

by Dave Stozzer

This is just a brief guide about African Parrots, you will find they make marvelous pets, these are very intelligent parrots and very playful, and you need to interact with them to get the best out of them. Dont go buying any parrot just hoping it will talk, most parrots will with patience, but be aware that some will not talk.Parrots need a lot of attention, give them that and it will be your friend for life.

African Parrots - About.

African parrots include Jardines, Senegals, Ruppells, and Meyers, they are smallish, and not expensive to buy. African parrots in general are more likely to be more sedate than most other parrots, and like their environment to be calm. Surprisingly perhaps, as Africa is the biggest continent where parrota are found,, it only has four genera..

Cages For Parrots.

For Senegals, the cage for them need not be overly large, as they prefer the security of a smaller cage, but remember not to fill the cage with furniture at the expense of room required for the parrot. A cage size of 19 by 19 inches is adequate for the likes of Senegals. Never leave the cage in or near your kitchen, where it could receive fumes etc that could kill the parrot. Keep the cage out of direct sunlight, you may think some sun will be good for your African parrots, but in fact it could overheat. Be aware also that placing near doors or windows has a risk of draughts, so place away from these area’s.

Pet Parrots.

The African parrots are very popular as pets, being intelligent, and with continual obedience training by a devoted owner, they are an easy parrot to train and teach to talk. Being more on the quiet side, they are not ideal pets for children.

African Parrots - Care.

Before you go and purchase your parrot, there are a few important things you need to consider, what is the cost to you, theres the cost of the parrot and cage, the on going costs of food and the vet checks, the cost of toys for the parrot, and importantly the time you can give to the parrot. By examining all those, you will have a better idea on the type of parrot best suited to your means. Remember keeping African parrots is not short term, their life span in captivity can reach 30 to 50 years.

Feed For African Parrots. .

Feed for African parrots is varied, though not all is known of their complete feeding habits, but this mixed diet works well, pear, apple, sprouts, cabbage, butter beans, split peas, mung, chick peas, beans, sunflower seeds, safflower, millet, oats and pine nuts. You can add vitamin or mineral supplement but not necessary if the nutritional needs are met of the parrot.
